Help on used speed units

I am about to try out your CPDLC system as a controller on VATSIM.

While playing around with it, I found speed units predefined as follows: M80 / K300. The M is clear, but would K be considered "km/h" or "knots"? According to ICAO flightplan standards, it would be "km/h" - though I cannot believe it really.

I am totally new to this type of ATC and did not find enough answers in the example: http://www.hoppie.nl/acars/example.html

Could somebody point me to a description of the used messages and units? Would I be correct if I look for "ARINC GlobalLink syntax" or am I on the wrong path here?

Thanks Jeroen, I am looking forward to use your tool. I am planning to staff EDGG_CTR when WorldFlight 2010 is going to pass on the morning of November 5th.

K = knots

Hello,

The thing is that the K in speeds always means knots -- this is not necessarily ICAO, but ATC internal notation. You can confidently assume that CPDLC terminology is 100% like voice terminology, because this is how it has been designed.

You should not look for ARINC or ACARS at all. CPDLC is totally independent of both, it just uses either satcom or ATN for communication.

"CPDLC" is the thing to Google for.

MCDU Simulation for SATCOM

Hi Jeroen,

I'm interested in integrating your MCDU simulator to a SATCOM unit (specifically Rockwell Collins' SwiftBroadband 2200). Can you point me in the right direction on what's needed? Thanks.

Integration with real avionics

Hello,

Thanks for your interest.

Technically the MCDU does not speak ARINC 739, but it is sufficiently close to bridge this gap with a straightforward adaptor program. I wrote such a program as a contract job for an avionics manufacturer. This means that I am not in the position to offer it to anybody. However, if you contact me privately via E-mail with a bit more info, I may be able to link you up with this avionics company for an arrangement.
